Review: Wooden Toys @ The Wooden Toy Shack

Posted June 24, 2015 by Bethanie Lunn

Yeah OK, I know toys are good for kids, especially if they help educate and develop them but the interior snob in me still isn’t keen on how they look around the house, especially the noisy plastic ones!  In the lounge, I store all my boys’ toys in a hollow footstool with a lid to keep the place looking as tidy as possible, and to turn the room back to an adult space once he’s asleep.  I know some of you don’t mind either way but this is just me.  The kind of toys I do love however, that I see as almost decorative, are beautifully crafted wooden toys, so when I discovered The Wooden Toy Shack, I got shopping.

As a small retailer, they are able to handpick all the toys featured on the site that are each high quality, safe and environmentally friendly.  The categories are dolls & houses, trains & transport, kitchens & playoffs to educational & puzzles and animals plus you can search by age range.

I also love that they don’t categorise the toys by gender, hurrah!  Finally – a toy retailer in the 21st century.  If your boy wants to play with a Doll’s House, why not?  If your little girl prefers a truck, so what?  I agree with The Wooden Toy Shack in that we should ‘let toys be toys’.

Frankie’s personal favourites right now are animals so we chose Lionel the Wooden Toy Lion, Silver the Wooden Toy Horse and Pinky the Wooden Toy Pig.

Importantly, every toy is eco-friendly and safe for your child in that they are made from wood sourced from Schima Superba (a fast growing tree harvested in a forest plantation), the fabrics are AZO dye free, scraps from the production are used to grow mushrooms and they are hand painted using child friendly paint and formaldehyde free glue. It’s evident that making the choice over plastic is a positive one for the environment and future generations…and alright, wooden toys look cool too 😉

Just check out the above video of my son Frankie playing with his new toys.  Not only have they helped his knowledge of animals develop but he adores them, so much that he sometimes brings them to dinner to join him (so sweet). They’re very durable and easily cleaned too – two key factors with my son! Frankie’s reaction to his wooden toys when I asked if he liked them was very enthusiastic, so now I’m totting up a shopping list of future buys.  With prices starting from under a tenner they make ideal, affordable presents too.
